A Personal Note on Beyond Rank
The Leadership and Legacy of Major General Milinda Peiris
Major General Lal Gunasekara
Former Deputy Vice Chancellor and Rector, Southern Campus, KDU
“Beyond Rank therefore deserves to be read not merely as the story of one military officer, but as a reflection on leadership, resilience, vision, human relationships and the enduring value of service.”
Beyond Rank: The Leadership and Legacy of Major General Milinda Peiris, by Kithsiri Amaratunga, is much more than a biography of a distinguished military officer. It is a thoughtful and engaging account of a journey shaped by courage, resilience, professional commitment and, above all, a deep sense of service.
I had the privilege of being closely associated with Major General Milinda Peiris for a little over half a decade, serving as a Deputy Vice Chancellor of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) and as Rector of its Southern Campus, and with Kithsiri Amaratunga as an academic colleague at the same University. This personal association gives me a particular appreciation of the experiences and qualities so vividly brought out in this book.
The book successfully takes the reader beyond military rank, appointments and achievements to explore the qualities that define genuine leadership. Major General Peiris’s remarkable ability to identify the right person for the right job is well captured by the author. Equally noteworthy is his human touch and his ability to build cohesive teams suited to the task at hand. Kithsiri has illustrated these qualities through numerous examples drawn from the General’s life, career and leadership.
Major General Peiris’s operational service, battlefield experiences, diplomatic assignments and senior command appointments provide valuable insights into the demands and responsibilities of military leadership. His recovery from serious battlefield injuries is particularly illustrative of the determination, courage and resilience required to overcome adversity. Such moments of extreme adversity can reveal much about an individual’s character and capacity for leadership. Major General Peiris demonstrated these qualities under the most demanding circumstances, and the author has presented these experiences with honesty and without exaggeration.
Of particular significance is the account of Major General Peiris’s transition from military command to academic leadership as Vice Chancellor of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University. The transformation and expansion of the University during his tenure demonstrate that effective leadership extends well beyond the battlefield. Vision, strategic thinking, institutional discipline and the ability to bring together professionals from diverse disciplines are equally essential in building and sustaining a successful institution.
Major General Peiris was always a mission-oriented and determined taskmaster. Once he identified a strategic objective, he worked relentlessly to secure the necessary endorsement from the higher echelons and ensured that his vision was translated into action through the teams he assembled and led. At the same time, he commanded respect across all levels of the organisation. Importantly, he never failed to recognise and appreciate the contribution of those who worked with him. This quality of leadership is amply evident throughout the author’s narration.
The establishment of the Faculty of Medicine and the conception and substantial development of the University Hospital at KDU were major undertakings that might have appeared well beyond the conventional scope of a military leader. Yet Major General Peiris had the vision and determination to pursue these ambitious initiatives and lay the foundations for their success. Similarly, the establishment and development of KDU’s Southern Campus at Sooriyawewa represented another major step in extending the University’s reach beyond its traditional base, accomplished through his vision, commitment and the support of a capable team.
The breadth of Major General Milinda Peiris’s contribution cannot possibly be captured within a single volume. Nevertheless, Kithsiri Amaratunga has succeeded in portraying his life and career through a rich collection of experiences, examples and major achievements that enable the reader to appreciate the qualities that shaped his leadership and legacy.
Kithsiri Amaratunga has skilfully brought together personal recollections, historical events, professional experiences and institutional developments to create an engaging and informative narrative. Beyond Rank therefore deserves to be read not merely as the story of one military officer, but as a reflection on leadership, resilience, vision, human relationships and the enduring value of service.
It is, in many respects, a story of leadership that truly goes beyond rank.
Additional reviews and reflections will be added here as they are received.
